Contrasts & Contradictions

BACKGROUND

The Gallery was founded by Pearl Lam in 1992 in Hong Kong with the mission of fostering international dialogue on Chinese and Asian contemporary art. To this end, the Gallery regularly invites leading Western artists and designers to the Orient, tasking them with the creation of new works that represent their unique vision of China. This approach challenges the boundaries of traditional Chinese art and craft, pushing the creative envelope.

Playing a vital role in stimulating global discourse on cultural practices from the region, the Galleries are dedicated to championing artists who re-evaluate and challenge prevailing perceptions. Across the Gallery’s locations in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore, each venue collaborates with renowned curators to present a distinct programming lineup. This includes major solo exhibitions, special projects, installations, and conceptually rigorous group shows.

Through this multifaceted approach, the Galleries have established themselves as dynamic platforms for the exploration and celebration of Chinese and Asian contemporary art. By inviting international artists to engage with the region’s rich cultural heritage, the Galleries foster a cross-cultural exchange that enriches the understanding and appreciation of artistic expression from China and Asia. This commitment to promoting artistic dialogue and innovation has solidified the Gallery’s reputation as a leading voice in the global art.
