Vulgar; Common?!

BACKGROUND

“ChaoYu” refers to a category of language commonly regarded as impolite or offensive in society. It is often used to convey strong emotions and may include words, phrases, or behaviors perceived as rude, vulgar, or socially inappropriate.

While the use of ChaoYu remains controversial, many scholars argue that it merits recognition as a legitimate form of linguistic expression. They assert that employing ChaoYu does not necessarily diminish a speaker’s overall language competence. As language reflects social conventions and cultural values, ChaoYu—when widely accepted in public discourse—should be acknowledged as part of the living language and represented in dictionaries and linguistic studies.

The debate surrounding ChaoYu highlights the dynamic and evolving nature of language. Recognizing its role encourages a deeper understanding of human expression and the complex sociocultural forces that shape linguistic development over time.
